Chapter 1 –Pain … For some a never-ending story
There are many factors that may limit, impede or promote healing in the body. It is important to recognise that PAIN itself stimulates the healing process, that electrical circuits and chemicals are produced endogenously, keeping active and happy promotes good health and that something as simple as breathing exercises can relieve pain. This chapter helps us to understand that our attitude and disposition and the emotions of stress and fear play an important role in our responses and that pain is UNIQUE to each individual, we will then come to realise that we have more control over the situation and our own healing than we previously thought possible.
Chapter 2 - Symptoms
This chapter expresses some of the comments and case histories that reflect the “pain experiences” of certain chronic pain patients. These comments expose the devastating effect that chronic pain has had on their lives. It reveals their inner feelings about themselves, their condition, society and their treatment and gives expression to their dissatisfaction, desperation and despair in these situations.
Chapter 3 – Have you experienced any of these?
This chapter enumerates the symptoms of chronic pain, procedures for investigation of the pain, and the medications and procedures applied to relieve chronic pain.
Chapter 4 – What are the bad things that happen to people?
We examine some of the negative aspects that might influence pain, the healing period and future health.
They are: pain, the pain cycle, trauma, both physical and
emotional, doctor-shopping, our emotions, stress, fear avoidance and obesity.
Chapter 5 –
Do you need a diagnosis?
Many patients believe that if they dont have a diagnosis for their pain they will not be able to achieve relief - this is not always the case. This chapter brings understanding that the nervous system may be altered to produce pain that is not always visible in diagnostic procedures.
